Avoid rental scams in TCI
Rental fraud happens everywhere. Here is how to protect yourself when searching for a long-term home in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Every listing on tci.rent is manually verified by our team. If something feels off, trust your instincts and report it to us.
Warning signs to watch for
Deposit requested before viewing
Never send money before you have visited the property in person and confirmed the landlord has authority to rent it.
Landlord cannot arrange a viewing
A legitimate landlord can always arrange an in-person or video viewing. If viewings are refused, walk away.
High pressure to decide quickly
Scammers create urgency to stop you thinking clearly. A genuine landlord will give you time to make an informed decision.
Requests for personal documents upfront
Passports, NIB numbers, or bank details should never be shared before you have signed a formal tenancy agreement.
Price significantly below market rate
If a property looks exceptional at a price that seems too low, it probably is. Research comparable rentals in the area.
How to stay safe
Verify the listing is on tci.rent
Only deal with listings you found directly on tci.rent. Listings shared via social media or messaging apps may not have been verified.
Keep all communication on-platform
Use the tci.rent enquiry form so there is a clear record of all correspondence between you and the landlord.
Always view before you pay
Visit the property in person. If you are relocating from abroad, ask for a live video walkthrough with the landlord present.
Check ownership documents
A legitimate landlord can show proof of ownership or a management agreement. Ask before signing any tenancy agreement.
Use traceable payment methods
Never pay cash or cryptocurrency for a deposit or rent. Use bank transfers so there is a verifiable record if a dispute arises.
